Young women can influence better image of women

According to conclusion of conference ‘About Women and Image’ in Curaçao

Willemstad – “The urgency to pass on knowledge to young women and the caution not to lose what has already been gained.” These are two of the conclusions of the third annual conference “About Women and Image” that was held the 3rd and 4th of March 2006 in the conference room of the Holiday Beach Hotel & Casino in Curaçao. The lieutenant governor of Curaçao, Ms. Lizanne Richards-Dindial, did the opening and applauded that these kinds of conferences can be held in Curaçao. Lieutenant governor Richards-Dindial symbolically declared the conference open by lighting a pink candle as a guide for this yearly conference in Curaçao.

The keynote speaker was Roberta Clarke MSc of the Barbados office of the United Nations Fund for the development of women UNIFEM. According to her, one of the obstacles is that due to the lack of help, many women stay in familiar situations that endanger their life and the future of their children. Besides that, there is this serious problem in the Caribbean of an explosive amount of infections with the HIV virus that seems difficult to control and is causing many female victims. “This happens because the image of where women should be in the community is not the image that is beneficial for women”, Clarke stated, explaining that while there are women as objects and somebody to misuse, there will be situations that endanger the life of a woman.

Speaker Reyna Joe on her turn brought forward that local and international consciousness raising is the solution for a correct public image of women. That is why utmost should be done for our young women to understand how a good image developed today can be beneficial for them in their future career.

Speaker Dr. Rachnilda Lynch Arduin accentuated legal aspects concerning the image of women. Her conclusion is that next to laws, there should be unity between conscious women and men to boycott relationships outside of marriage that continue to create victims amongst children who are born out of such relationships, the woman in the official position and also the woman who has the status of by-side.

Finally, it was speaker Goriaka Maal who pointed out that your image could work against you if you yourself are not aware of this. But most important is for the woman to decide that she herself is responsible for the image she has created.

Moderators Lynda Williams and Orphaline Saleh did a good job guiding the conference in an efficient and professional manner. The reaction of the participants at the third annual conference ‘About Women and Image’ was tremendous and they wish that more informative opportunities of this category will follow so that there will be a continuation of positive energy of consciousness that undoubtedly benefits the whole community.

On behalf of BISInc (Bright Ideas and Services Incorporated), the organizer of the series of annual conferences ‘About Women and ……’, everybody was thanked who in one way or the other contributed for this conference to become once more a great success. Special attention is given to the real dynamo advisor of the conference, Sister Norma Angel Ph.D., and all companies in Curaçao that sponsored a student of the local university to guarantee that future female professionals develop a broad consciousness of their role in our community. The 4th annual conference ‘About Women and Power” will be on the 2nd and 3rd of March 2007 in Curaçao.
